Riddick hits 10 threes for school mark

Benton sophomore Westin Riddick set a school record Tuesday night by hitting 10 three-pointers in the Panthers' 61-40 victory over Sheridan.

The 6-3 guard scored all 30 of his points on three-pointers, going 10 of 18 from beyond the arc. He missed his two two-point attempts and he did not attempt a free throw.

"It was by far a school record," Benton first-year coach Dexter Hendrix said. "I was told we've had as many as seven and maybe eight before."

Hendrix said he did not know who held the previous mark.

Riddick hit four three-pointers in the first half as Benton built a 29-21 advantage. He was 6 of 8 on three-point attempts in the third quarter.

"He got loose on transition, and the rim just kept getting bigger and bigger for him," Hendrix said. "His teammates did a good job of finding him."

Riddick's previous high had been five three-pointers in a game, which he accomplished twice this season. He is 50 of 125 on three-pointers this season.

According to the Arkansas Activities Association's record book, the state record for three-pointers in a game is 13, held by Mario Levon Manning of Huttig and set in 1999.

MARION BOYS

8-0 in state

Marion is tied with Jonesboro for the 7A/6A-East lead, but the Patriots' overall record is only .500.

For the moment, Marion Coach Irving Clay said he does not mind his team being overshadowed by the No. 2-ranked Hurricane.

"I'm good with that," Clay said Wednesday, a day after the Patriots posted a 71-48 victory over Mountain Home. "We don't mind being the (underdog). That's a role we relish. But we have high expectations of ourselves."

Senior point guard Laquan Davie scored 13 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and handed out 10 assists in Tuesday's victory.

The Patriots (8-8, 4-0) hit 26 of 50 shots from the floor, including an 8-of-14 effort in the second quarter that allowed Marion to build a 31-15 halftime lead.

Junior guard Marquise Brown led Marion with 18 points, while sophomores Will Mangum and Shaun Doss scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Marion, who are 8-0 against teams from Arkansas, will play at North Little Rock (12-5, 3-1) on Friday and at Jonesboro (13-4, 4-0) on Friday, Jan. 30.

"We're starting to play with a lot of confidence," Clay said. "But we're about to find out whether we're a fluke or not."
