Rogers officer arrested on suspicion of DWI

A Rogers Police Department officer was arrested Sunday on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to a news release from the department.

Michael Elkins was arrested by the Benton County Sheriff's Office, according to the news release.

He has been placed on paid administrative leave pending results of an internal investigation.

Elkins has worked for the department since 2007, according to the news release.

According to an incident report, the arresting deputy was parked in a lot at Eighth and Walnut streets in Rogers with his window down so he could watch traffic.

He saw a vehicle stopped at the light and revving his motor, according to the report. The deputy reported he saw the accelerate quickly and make a left-hand turn, spinning the tires and turning car sideways as it entered the intersection.

The deputy caught up to the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop, according to the report.

Elkins was driving the car, with two girls and his wife as passengers, according to the report. His blood-alcohol level registered 0.127 with a breath tester, the report stated. An hour after the initial stop, another test registered a level of 0.099, according to the report. Intoxication is presumed at a blood-alcohol level of 0.08.

Elkins was booked and released at the Benton County Jail, according to the report.
