Germs, doorknob go hand-in-hand

A dirty secret about the doorknob: It's apt to be one of the icky-germiest objects in the house.

Doorknobs rank along with telephones, light switches and TV remotes as household belongings that people touch the most. Along with unsightly smudges, these things accumulate an invisible multitude of bacteria and viruses.

"Zap them with surface-disinfecting sprays," is Good Housekeeping's advice.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency tests and certifies sprays that work to help prevent illness. EPA certification on the label means the spray is "effective against the most common emerging pathogens," the agency says.
