UAFS hires women’s assistant

Jordan Greenleaf, a former player at Auburn and a women’s assistant coach at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, Mo., was named a women’s assistant at Arkansas-Fort Smith on Tuesday.

Greenleaf fills a vacancy created by the resignation of Elisa Shoate, who returned to nursing full time.

Greenleaf was at State Fair Community for two seasons, helping the Lady Roadrunners to a 44-15 combined record. They earned the Region XVI Tournament championship in her first season and a berth in the NJCAA National Tournament, where they lost in the first round to Western Nebraska. This past season, the Roadrunners lost to Mineral Area College in the Region XVI championship game.

“People whom I know and trust who have worked with her and coached her just raved about her,” UAFS Coach Louis Whorton said in a news release. “I was impressed with her maturity and her drive to be successful in college basketball. She will have a great understanding of what these kids have to do to be the very best.”

Oaklawn begins barn construction

Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs has begun construction of a new barn, which replaces Barn No. 2, and will be ready for the 2016 live meet.

Barn No. 2 is one of the few remaining wooden barns in the stable area, and the new barn will be similar to the barn named after 2004 Arkansas Derby winner Smarty Jones. The removal of Barn No. 2, along with a structure used by the maintenance department, will allow Oaklawn to gain hundreds of additional parking spaces.

In addition to the new barn, the oldest horse path to the racing surface will be replaced by a new on/off gap positioned on the south turn.
