1975 Delta Exhibition award rallied Dombek's art passion

George Dombek says the Delta Exhibition gave his art career a real boost.

"It was one of the first shows I entered," he says. "In 1975, I won a purchase award. The juror was the director of the Whitney Museum of American Art. It got me started; it was very encouraging to me. I won $750, which was a lot of money for a struggling teacher and artist."

But, despite winning that prize and more awards at other competitions, it would be another 17 years before Dombek felt secure enough to pursue his art full time.

Now his work is in collections around the world and in some of the country's major museums.

Last year, a coffee table book, George Dombek: Paintings, was issued by the University of Arkansas Press. A new one, focused on his paintings of Arkansas barns, is in the works.

"I am hopeful the new book will be out in about a year," he says.
