ONE BIG FAMILY

Tae kwon do competitors, kin kick back for a little fun

The folks behind the ATA -- the rebranded moniker for the Little Rock-based American Taekwondo Association -- offered something a little different for their week-long annual World Expo this year: a Family Fun Night. Taking place July 10 on the grounds of the First Security Amphitheater in Little Rock, the carnival-like event featured rides, games, a rock climbing wall and a bouncy house, along with food-truck refreshments for sale.

The focal point of the evening was the program, which included the Team Demo and Team Sync finals along with Team Brazil's defeat of Team USA, 18-4, for the World Team Sparring championship. The evening also featured a screening of the first ATA Tigers animated cartoon -- an anti-bullying tale with animals representing participants in the association's kids program.

The expo, which drew songahm tae kwon do students and masters from schools from around the world, included a conference, a blood drive, training, world championships competition, belt testing, and a ceremony for new masters.
