MovieStyle: No quit Sherlock

While the character Sherlock Holmes has been interpreted in a lot of different ways, from Robert Downey Jr.’s steam-punk action hero to Benedict Cumberbatch's chilly 21st-century sociopath, you've probably never seen a Sherlock quite like the one Ian McKellan plays in Bill Condon's Mr. Holmes. Based on Mitch Cullin's 2005 book A Slight Trick of the Mind, Mr. Holmes gives us a retired Holmes near the end of his life, struggling with a failing memory and late-onset ruefulness. And of course, a final case to crack. Philip Martin has a review.

Also opening this week, is the old school boxing film Southpaw, which provides Jake Gyllenhaal with a meaty physical role, Chris Columbus’ herding Adam Sandler's and other assorted cats in the CGI-heavy Pixels (reviewed by our Piers Marchant and Dan Lybarger respectively), the young adult drama Paper Towns and he horror movie The Vatican Tapes. Also, MovieStyle editor Martin also provides a peek at next week's inaugural Kaleidoscope Film Festival, and Karen Martin runs down this week's home video releases.

All in this week's MovieStyle.
