Stars Come Out illuminates Art of Dance competition

Temperatures in Little Rock climbed into the mid-90s on July 18, but it didn't stop the flurry of downtown activity on multiple fronts ... a fraternity's international conclave, an outdoor fashion show ... and a variety show competition. Luckily, The Stars Come Out Inc.'s Art of the Dance Variety Show and fundraiser took place away from the heat.

Founders Carlette and Don Henderson welcomed attendees as they trickled into the Ron Robinson Theater in Little Rock's River Market District. There were concessions, silent auction goodies and a raffle. The competition featured performances by comedian Natra Joy; the I CAN! Dance troupe; Graceful Images with artist Theresa Cates and dancer Titonia Flowers; Movin' N Groovin', an urban hip-hop dance troupe; Yeah8 Arts & Motion Inc., a tap-dance group; poet Roger Armbrust; vocalist Genine Perez; the New Creation Dance Co. praise dancers; hula-hoop performer Katie Sunshine; Mirana Middle Eastern Dance Co.; and the Tidwell Project Dance Ensemble.

And the winner was ... Movin' N Groovin', featuring Destiny Hill, Jay Lewis, Bryan Hill and Trey Capers. The group donated its $300 prize to the Timmons Arts Foundation Summer Youth Camp.

The mission of The Stars Come Out is to help fight obesity and chronic illness by encouraging dance as a way to maintain good health.
