Two inmates grab, swallow handcuff keys, reports say

A pair of inmates at the Pulaski County jail — including one facing two murder charges — grabbed handcuff keys from jail deputies in the facility and swallowed them, according to arrest reports.

Jason Phillips, 27, and Tony Lenzaro Brooks, 29, were each charged with furnishing prohibited articles.

An arrest report for Brooks shows he was formally charged in the new case about 10 p.m. Sunday after he the day before "snatched [a] deputy's handcuff key and it was determined that he ingested it."

Brooks is set to go on trial this month in the killings of two women in Little Rock in June 2013: Gloria Summage, 50, who was found in a burned home at 1909 E. Eighth St., and Amy May Hughett, 31, who was found in a pile of burning tires behind a storage facility at 5115 Young Road.

Brooks was also charged earlier this month with aggravated assault after he threw feces at a jail deputy, court records show.

An arrest report for Phillips said he on Saturday "snatched the handcuffs" from a deputy's hand as he was being uncuffed and got hold of the key that was still in them.

Phillips was taken Sunday to a local hospital, where he was X-rayed and "it was discovered that he ingested the key," the report said.

Phillips was being held on several charges including three counts of aggravated assault on a correctional employee.
