Hutchinson seeks USDA help for Arkansas' flooded farms

GARLAND CITY — Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson says he has asked the nation's agriculture secretary to approve emergency loans for farmers in 37 counties that have been impacted by flooding.

The governor says he hopes to submit a request for a federal disaster declaration soon.

Hutchinson on Tuesday visited parts of southwestern Arkansas have have been affected by flooding. Some areas remain under water.

He said state officials are still conducting preliminary surveys of the damage as they prepare a federal disaster request for the 37 counties.

The governor asked for assistance from the USDA on Monday.

Heavy rains in Oklahoma and Texas in recent weeks helped push the Red River out of its banks, and storms over Arkansas have also contributed to the state's woes.
