Teachers get 'air' space at new Arts Center show

The Arkansas Arts Center, East Ninth and Commerce streets, will open "Inspired by Nature," an exhibit of Plein Air art (works created outdoors) by two of its Museum School instructors -- watercolors and landscapes by David Paul Cook and landscapes in oil by Victoria Harvey -- Tuesday in the Museum School Gallery.

Simon comedy

Devin Robertson and Norman Cornell play earnest young men struggling to put out a protest magazine, with Jordan Phipps as the title all-American girl next door who sends both of them into a romantic tailspin in Neil Simon's The Star-Spangled Girl, opening Tuesday at Murry's Dinner Playhouse, 6323 Colonel Glenn Road, Little Rock.

Curtain times are 7:45 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday (12:45 p.m. matinees only, Wednesday, July 1 and 8), 12:45 and 6:45 p.m. Sunday through July 18. Doors and the buffet open 90 minutes before curtain. Sax-y documentary

Grammy-winning jazz saxophonist Kirk Whalum will be on hand for the Arkansas debut of his new documentary-concert film, The Gospel According to Jazz Chapter IV, about the the making of his two-disc music compilation of that title, at 7 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church of Rogers, 307 W. Elm St., Rogers.

Military documentary

The MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History, 503 E. Ninth St., Little Rock, will screen the HBO documentary The Strange History of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, about the policy that forced members of the American armed forces to lie about their sexual orientation to remain in the military, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday as part of its "Movies at MacArthur" series. Leisure-ly exhibit

"Rogers Fun & Games," an exhibit focusing on the history of golf, roller skating, bowling, tennis and swimming in Rogers using objects from the museum's collection and from private collectors, opens Saturday at the Rogers Historical Museum, 322 S. Second St., Rogers. The exhibit will be up through Jan. 10. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday and Wednesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday, 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. Arts adventures

Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church at 4823 Woodlawn Ave., Little Rock, will host two half-day Adventures in the Arts Music and Arts Academy camps for students age 4-16, July 20-24 and Aug. 3-7.

Hours will be 8 a.m.-noon. Campers can choose four from a list of offerings -- IQ Music, Discovery Violin, Just Stomp It (rhythm class), Art Sampler, Printmaking, Art in Flight, Twisted Sculpture, Discovery Collage, Calligraphy, Nifty Needlework, Bollywood Dance, Yoga, Discovery Acting and Masters of Illusion.

Fee is $185 for each week; some scholarships are available.
