Timed trial lets bikers show mettle on pedals

The ultimate indicator of a cyclist's strength and endurance is a race called the time trial.

The course is laid out in front of the racer, and the only thing to beat is the clock.

On Sunday, the Arkansas State Time Trial Championship will take place in Galloway, where winning riders from various skill categories will be awarded a coveted "State Championship" jersey and bragging rights for the year.

The first racer will begin at 7 a.m., with all others rolling off in 30-second intervals. All men's categories will begin first, followed by all women's categories. Juniors will race 20K while all other categories will complete a 40K on an out-and-back course with no elevation change, making wind direction and the racer's strength paramount.

The course begins near the intersection of Arkansas 391 and U.S. 70 in Galloway.

The categories for the men's division are Senior Men 1, 2; Senior Men 3; Senior Men 4, 5; Master Men starting at ages 30 to 34 and in four year increments until Master Men 60 plus; Junior Men 14 and under; and Junior Men 15 to 18. The categories for the women's division is Senior Women 1, 2, 3; Senior Women 4; Master Women 35 plus; Master Women 45 plus; Junior Women 14 and under; and Junior Women 15 to 18.
