TEXARKANA, Ark. — The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department says both northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. 71 in southwestern Arkansas are closed because of high water.

The department said nearly 2½ miles of the highway are closed from the Arkansas Welcome Center in Texarkana to Arkansas 380 at Ogden. The closure was at Arkansas 108 north of Texarkana in Miller County but the end of the closure was moved to accommodate area businesses.

The AHTD said Arkansas 41 is open as an alternate route.

The department said southbound lanes of U.S. 71 will remain closed until the water recedes and highway engineers can assess it for damage.

Barricades, signs and portable electronic message boards have been placed along U.S. 71 to warn motorists of the closure.
