Michelle Bachelet, the president of Chile, visited and took pictures with 14-year-old Valentina Maureira in a Santiago hospital after the teen posted a video on YouTube lobbying Bachelet to allow doctors to euthanize her because she is tired of struggling with cystic fibrosis.

Mark Tomat, 26, of Mahwah, N.J., pleaded guilty to child endangerment after his girlfriend's 9-month-old son ingested heroin in his home, which rendered the boy unresponsive and sent him to the hospital, where the child recovered after being given a heroin antidote.

Douglas Derrick McKenzie, 28, of Perry, Ga., who was handcuffed and put in a patrol car after police answering a domestic-dispute call discovered an outstanding warrant for him, is now charged with felony escape after he drove off in the police car and with misdemeanor theft for taking the $35 handcuffs with him, police say.

Arthur Zilberstein, 48, an anesthesiologist in Seattle, was fined $5,000 and had his medical license suspended indefinitely because he sent dozens of sexually explicit texts and photos while supervising C-sections and other surgeries.

Omar Pitts, 32, of College Park, Ga., was sentenced to life in prison plus 50 years for the murder of his girlfriend's 12-year-old brother, whom Pitts forced to hold paint buckets outside for hours on a hot day as punishment for taking his shoes off after being told not to.

Ed Davis of Ester, Alaska, said he had little hope of seeing Madera, his blind 11-year-old Labrador retriever, alive again after she wandered off Feb. 6 during a cold snap, but a biker found her in the woods about a half-mile from Davis' house, 14 pounds lighter but otherwise healthy.
