Appealing to vegan-curious dieters in central Arkansas, Amanda Cabaniss-Rogers is area director for a vegan diet program called Get Waisted.
Not a charity, Get Waisted was founded by two Minnesotans -- Dr. Mary Wendt and chef Tess Challis -- three years ago and is not associated with Kickstart Your Health Little Rock or the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
For $144 ($12 a week for 12 weeks) clients have access to online support, meal plans and calculators as well as a once-a-week meeting.
"For lack of a better comparison, it's set up a lot like Weight Watchers," she says. "I think when you're transitioning your diet this way, that's usually the big missing piece -- having that face-to-face community support."
The program is split into two goals: a diet transition to whole grains and beans, fruits and vegetables, without stringent rationing, with the aim of losing 1 to 2 pounds a week. The other, "Foodie Detox," has participants eating from a color-coded meal plan and aiming for a loss of several pounds a week.
