Bridge redo to shut ramps off La Harpe

Preparations for replacement of the Broadway Bridge over the Arkansas River in Pulaski County will require the access ramps to and from Arkansas 10, also called La Harpe Boulevard, to be closed and removed, starting next week, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

The work also includes closing a nearby parking area accessed by North Arch Street and a section of the Arkansas River Trail on state right of way.

The parking areas and the Arkansas River Trail will be closed beginning at 6 a.m. Monday, weather permitting. Signs indicating a detour for the River Trail will be put up by the city of Little Rock, the department said.

The access ramp carrying traffic from westbound La Harpe to northbound Broadway will be closed by Wednesday. The access ramp carrying traffic from southbound Broadway to westbound La Harpe will be closed at a later date once the northbound access ramp is removed, the department said.

The new Broadway Bridge, which will be built in 2016, will include new ramps for access to La Harpe. There will be no direct access, however, between the existing bridge and La Harpe until the new bridge is complete in the fall of 2016, the department said.

Kansas City, Mo.-based Massman Construction Co. was awarded a $98.4 million contract in September 2014 to replace the bridge. The structure is expected to be out of service for six months while being replaced. That work is expected to occur between May and November 2016, the department said.
