Historic places get attention

Join the Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas for happy hour to learn more about "Historic Places that Matter to Arkansas." The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. April 7 at Maxine's Tap Room, 107 N. Block Ave. in Fayetteville. From every mule sold, $1 will be donated to Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas.

"Dollars & Sense of Historic Building Rehabilitation" will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 8 at the UARK Bowl, 644 W. Dickson St. in Fayetteville. This program is designed to discuss the economic potential of historic building rehabilitation and the tools and resources for redevelopment. Hobbs speaker talks septic

Caroline Eastman, an environmental health specialist in the Onsite Wastewater Program with the Arkansas Department of Health, will speak to the Friends of Hobbs at 2 p.m. today at Hobbs State Park visitor center near Rogers. She has worked with septic systems for the last 10 years and in the environmental field for almost 20 years.

Learn to deal with dementia

Dealing with the Difficulties of Dementia will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 7 at the Pinnacle Country Club, 3 Clubhouse Drive in Rogers, and at the Bentonville Public Library, 405 S. Main St., in Bentonville on April 8.

Dr. Angela Norman will define dementia and Alzheimer's, provide strategies for dealing with different behaviors, present communication techniques and provide resources to help.

Design campsfor students

The Fay Jones School of Architecture is hosting Design Camp this summer for students who like to draw, who are creative and inventive and who enjoy working with their hands and building things. Students will see how these concepts come together in the work of architects, landscape architects and interior designers.

Three weeklong day camps will be held in June: the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville, June 8-12; Garvan Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs, June 15-19; and Arkansas Studies Institute in Little Rock, June 22-26. All camps run from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

These camp sessions are for students going into ninth through 12th grades in fall 2015. Hands-on activities, discussions, presentations and tours will be led by Fay Jones School faculty members from each of the design disciplines.

In each camp session, students will work with their instructors to create a design project. Over the week, they'll do quick sketching exercises, visit the site of their project, make multiple drawings and build a model of their design.

Cost is $250 for early registration by Monday and $300 for registration by May 22. Need-based scholarships are available.

Fundraiser for fairness

DeVito's Restaurant, 5 Center St. in Eureka Springs, will host a cocktail social fundraiser from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in support of passing Ordinance 2223, securing equal rights for Eureka and beyond. A $5 cover charge includes complimentary hors d'oeuvres; a cash bar will be available.

Library seeks new friends

The Friends of the Bella Vista Library are sponsoring their annual membership drive through Tuesday. All are welcome to become a member, a friend. The annual fee of $10, as well as other annual fundraising events, is used to support the growing needs and expanding goals of the library.

Elkins Centerholds banquet

The Elkins Senior Activity & Wellness Center will hold a banquet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the center, 149 W. First St.

Northwest Arkansas Naturals mascot Strike will welcome guests from 5:10 to 5:40 p.m. Guest speaker will be Sean Rochelle, Arkansas Razorback Foundation president.

Entertainment will be live jazz music provided by Jerry Dowding. A dinner and silent auction will be held.

Cost is $15 for adults, $10 for children, with children younger than 5 admitted free.

All proceeds will go to support the Senior Center, including the Meals on Wheels program.

Architect lecture series continues

Peter L. Gluck will present a lecture titled "What's Wrong with Us?" at 5 p.m. Monday in Ken and Linda Sue Shollmier Hall, Room 250 of Vol Walker Hall, on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville, as part of the Fay Jones School of Architecture lecture series.

Gluck is founder and principal of Gluck+ in New York City. Since 1972, the firm has generated a multi-faceted approach to the design of award-winning buildings recognized for their inventive, conceptually unique and comprehensive design solutions. Most designs are constructed by the firm through their unique approach to architect-led design build.

This is the ZweigWhite Leadership in Design Lecture.

The Walton College Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center will present a free webinar titled "Choosing the Proper Legal Entity for Your Small Business" from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

Transfers facilitated

The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith will host a One-Stop Transfer Day from 9 a.m. to noon April 7 in the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center to simplify the enrollment process for students considering transferring to UAFS.

Students can apply for admission and financial aid, learn about their transfer credits, take any necessary placement tests and register for classes.

Students must have a 2.0 or higher GPA to be eligible to transfer to UAFS. Those attending should bring official transcripts from each previously attended college or university, a copy of immunization records, latest tax return and an official high school transcript or GED scores. Students submitting transcripts by March 31 and who have at least a 3.0 transfer GPA will have the chance to win a UAFS scholarship at the event.
