Sheriff: Woman's body found in northeast Arkansas river

BATESVILLE — Authorities in northeast Arkansas say a woman's body has been found in the White River.

Independence County Sheriff Steve Jeffery said the body was found Thursday near Batesville. He told the Batesville Daily Guard that a person gathering driftwood called around 7:30 a.m. to say the body of an adult woman was in the river.

Her cause of death is unclear. Jeffery declined to comment on other details about the case.

The body has been sent to the state Crime Laboratory in Little Rock. State officials will work to identify the woman and determine how she died.
