CANDLELIGHT TOUR

Quarter turnout

Variety of structures to peek through draws spring tourists downtown

There were six stops at diverse structures on the 51st annual Quapaw Quarter Association's Spring Tour of Homes the evening of May 9. The entrances to each on the candlelight tour were marked with shepherd's hooks holding hanging candles and bouquets of spring flowers. A trolley provided transportation among buildings, which varied as much in style as in age. On the tour were Curran Hall, the Bowman-Carl House, Haile Cottage, the Firehouse Hostel and Museum, the Herron-Horton Office/Studio/Residence and Christ Episcopal Church.

Curran Hall was the oldest structure, having been built in 1842. The newest stop was erected 166 years later, in 2008 -- the sleek owner-designed Herron-Horton (wife/husband architects) building. Refreshments, such as champagne and pimento cheese and crackers, were provided at several of the stops.

Volunteers guided guests through the structures, pointing out significant or interesting details. The evening ended with dinner in the church's Bowen Hall, followed by a party.

The Quapaw Quarter Association's mission is to promote the preservation of Little Rock's heritage and the tour is a way to foster an appreciation of the historic buildings and neighborhoods in the city.

Jarrod Johnson was chairman of the event committee.
