ASU game to open Nebraska's 2017 football season

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska will open the 2017 football season against Arkansas State in Lincoln.

The Nebraska athletic department announced Monday that the Red Wolves would visit Memorial Stadium on Sept. 2. The game will be the third between the schools. Nebraska won 38-9 in 2009 and 42-13 in 2012.

Arkansas State will receive a school record $1.65 million payout for the meeting with Nebraska, ASU Athletic Director Terry Mohajir said.

The Red Wolves' previous record is $1.3 million for games at Southern California this season and at Auburn in 2016. ASU is set to make $4.25 million in game guarantees over the next three seasons.

The game also caused ASU to move its 2017 game at Nevada-Las Vegas to 2019. ASU's nonconference schedule so far includes the game at Nebraska and at home against Miami (Fla.).

The addition of Arkansas State completes Nebraska's 2017 schedule. The Cornhuskers' non-conference schedule also includes a game at Oregon and a matchup with Northern Illinois in Lincoln.

Arkansas State has won three Sun Belt Conference titles in the past four seasons. In addition to its 2017 trip to Lincoln, Arkansas State has future nonconference games scheduled against Southern California, Missouri, Auburn and Miami.

The agreement with Arkansas State completes Nebraska's schedules through the 2019 season.
