NLR district picks year’s top teacher

Dayna Maloch, a second-grade teacher at Meadow Park Elementary in North Little Rock School District, is the district’s 2015-16 Teacher of the Year.

Maloch will be recognized at Thursday’s School Board meeting.

Finalists for the honor were Ruba Al-Serhan, Rachel Jouvenaux, Julie Weaver and Megan Wilson.

Dropout program a finalist for grant

Economics Arkansas is a finalist in the State Farm Neighborhood $25,000 Assist Grant program for its CHOICES school dropout prevention initiative, Keeping Teens in School.

Economics Arkansas must collect enough Facebook votes to make it into the Top 40 Causes to receive the grant. The Arkansas organization is competing with 200 other causes.

Between now and June 3, people who want to vote can access the voting page through the competition’s website: state-assist.com/cause/1503966/keeping-teensin-school. Participants can cast up to 10 votes per day to support Economics Arkansas.

LR district leader launches column

Baker Kurrus, Little Rock School District’s new state-appointed superintendent, on Friday initiated what he said will be a weekly online column about the district.

Titled “Straight Talk by Baker Kurrus,” the column is available on the district’s website: lrsd.org.

Kurrus, a former 12-year member of the Little Rock School Board and an attorney, was appointed to his position on May 5 by Arkansas Education Commissioner Johnny Key.
