Holiday brings delegation home

Memorial Day week filled with personal appearances

WASHINGTON -- Members of the congressional delegation were in Arkansas last week for the Memorial Day holiday.

On Monday, U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton, a Republican from Dardanelle, attended Memorial Day events in Russellville. Tuesday, he toured Experian and Time Striping in Van Buren. Wednesday, he visited Arkansas Power and Electric Inc. in Fayetteville and the Superior Linen Plant in Springdale and attended Pratt & Whitney's Springdale facility expansion announcement. On Thursday, Cotton toured the UPS facility and the Skippy Peanut Butter plant in Little Rock. Friday, he visited the Pine Bluff Arsenal and Arkansas Children's Nutrition Center.

U.S. Rep. Rick Crawford, a Republican from Jonesboro, spoke at a Memorial Day ceremony in Marshall on Monday and at the Delta Regional Community and Economic Development Conference, held at the Clinton presidential library on Wednesday.

Also Wednesday, Crawford toured the Entergy plant in Newark with U.S. Sen. John Boozman, a Republican from Rogers.

On Tuesday, Boozman met with University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Chancellor Laurence Alexander and other university staff and toured the school's Aquaculture/Fisheries Center.

U.S. Rep. Steve Womack, a Republican from Rogers, on Tuesday visited Carroll County Electric in Berryville and spoke to Eureka Springs High School students. Wednesday, Womack was in Springdale to tour Kyya Chocolate's Elm Springs plant. On Thursday, Womack visited Armedica Manufacturing in Greenwood, before going to Fort Smith to tour Parrot Island Waterpark and the Donald W. Reynolds Cancer Support House.

After spending the early part of the week in Arkansas, U.S. Rep. French Hill, a Republican from Little Rock, was in Washington on Thursday to give a speech at the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority conference. He returned to Little Rock on Friday to meet with Metropolitan Housing Alliance Executive Director Rodney Forte.

On Friday, U.S. Rep. Bruce Westerman, a Republican from Hot Springs, visited Texarkana and Little River County to view flood damage.

Boozman on panel

Boozman was appointed by the Senate president pro tempore May 21 to serve on the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution. The board, composed of three U.S. senators, three U.S. House members, the vice president, the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and nine citizens, oversees administration of the Smithsonian Museums.

The board meets at least four times a year, often in the Smithsonian Castle on the National Mall.

Huckabee raising funds

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee plans to hold several fundraisers in Arkansas this week. Wednesday he is scheduled to raise money in Jonesboro and Little Rock, Thursday in El Dorado and Bentonville, and Friday in Texarkana.

Conway gets EPA grant

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Thursday that Conway will receive $200,000 for hazardous waste site assessment at the former Conway Scrap Metal site.

It is considered a brownfields site, an abandoned site that is difficult to redevelop because of the presence or potential presence of contamination.

Nationally, 146 communities split $54.3 million in grants to assess, clean and redevelop contaminated properties.
