Shane Claiborne to speak at LR church

Best-selling author and Christian activist Shane Claiborne will speak during a lunch program at noon Nov. 15 at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church in Little Rock. He will also preach during the 9 and 11 a.m. services in the sanctuary.

During worship services Claiborne’s topic will be “Resurrecting Church.” He will speak on “Tearing Down the Walls” during the lunch program in the Great Hall. The cost for the luncheon is $5 per person. Reservations may be made online at phumc.com/ shane or by calling (501) 664-3600. The deadline is Tuesday.

Claiborne’s books include The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical and Jesus for President, co-written with Chris Haw. He is the leader of The Simple Way, a faith community serving the homeless in Philadelphia.

Monks to perform at ASU-Mountain Home

Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery in India on a tour with The Mystical Arts of Tibet will perform sacred music and dance at 7 p.m. Nov. 19 in the Vada Sheid Community Development Center at Arkansas State University-Mountain Home, 1600 S. College St.

“Sacred Music, Sacred Dance for World Healing” will feature multiphonic singing and instruments such as the 10-foot-long dung-chen horns, trumpets, drums, bells and cymbals.

The monks will also construct a sand mandala Nov. 16-19 in the Dale Bumpers Great Hall at the center. An opening ceremony will be at noon Nov. 16 and it will be open to public viewing 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Nov. 17-18 and 10-11 a.m. Nov. 19, followed by a closing ceremony at noon.

Centering prayer event to be held at LR church

A centering prayer retreat, “Consenting to the Divine Presence,” will be held 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Arkansas House of Prayer, located on the grounds of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Little Rock. The retreat will be led by the Rev. Lowell Grisham and Nick Cole and will focus on silence, contemplative prayer and opening up to the presence of the Divine. Beginners and those experienced in centering prayer are welcome.

Participants can register for the entire day for $75 (including a vegetarian lunch) or for single sessions, either morning or afternoon, for $35. Registration is available online at arkansashouseofprayer.org/ events. Information is available by calling (501) 821-7773.

Ministry hosts retreat for those in mourning

The Pastoral Care Ministry of Second Presbyterian Church of Little Rock and Park Hill Presbyterian Church in North Little Rock are sponsoring a retreat 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 5 for those grieving the death of a loved one. The retreat will be at Park Hill Presbyterian Church, 3520 John F. Kennedy Blvd., North Little Rock.

Fran Shelton will be the program leader. Shelton is director of Faith and Grief Ministries in Dallas, which offers ongoing comfort to the bereaved through luncheons, retreats, seminars and support groups.
