62-year-old pedestrian killed while crossing I-40

A 62-year-old Memphis man died Friday after walking into traffic on Interstate 40 in Crittenden County, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

Jerry W. Robinson was walking north across westbound traffic on I-40 at the 279 mile marker about 8 p.m. Friday when he was struck by the driver of a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu traveling west in the outermost lane, state police said.

Robinson was pronounced dead at the scene by deputy coroner Larry Wolfe about 8:55 p.m. Friday.

The driver of the Malibu was not named in the state police report.

Travel conditions at the time of the pedestrian-vehicle accident were described as clear and dry.

The death was the 437th in a crash in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures. Year-to-date figures do not include the six deaths reported last week involving a charter bus crash on I-40.
