A Fayetteville teacher was arrested late Thursday on "suspicion of online enticement of a minor and attempting to obtain child pornography," the district's superintendent said in a statement Friday.

Fayetteville school district Superintendent Paul Hewitt said 24-year-old Evan Ballowe, a teacher at Owl Creek School, is on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

According to the school's website, Ballowe has been a teacher at Owl Creek School for three years and teaches sixth grade Intro to Business Communications and Technology.

Friday's statement was sent out to parents and guardians of students within the school district.

"We are fully cooperating with police in their investigation," Hewitt said.

A spokesman with the Department of Homeland Security confirmed Friday that his agency arrested Ballowe.

"At this time, since there is not yet an indictment, I'm precluded from discussing any specifics beyond stating that [an] investigation by our agency is ongoing," spokesman Bryan D. Cox said in a statement.

According to the statement, more information regarding Ballowe's arrest will be released as it becomes available.

Ballowe, who was booked about 11:58 p.m. Thursday, is being held at the Washington County jail on federal charges, records show.
