Former Bryant coach dies

Joe Treat, who coached Bryant to a boys state basketball title in 1981, died Saturday. He was 75.

Treat coached at Bryant from 1977 to 1997, retiring from teaching 2000. In 1983, Treat was selected to coach in the Mc-Donald’s All-American High School Basketball Game, becoming the first coach from Arkansas to do so.

In 1981, Bryant finished 33-2 and won the Class AAA title with a 39-38 victory over Van Buren. The Hornets defeated Little Rock Hall in the Overall semifinals before losing to unbeaten West Memphis in the Overall finals.

Treat is survived by his wife, Cathy, his daughter and son in law Jeannie and Hall Qualls of Rogers, his son and daughter in law Tim and Kim Treat of San Jose, Calif., his son and daughter in law Chris and Jana Treat of Bryant, his sister Geneva Massey of Conway, brother Jack Treat of Marshall and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday, Nov. 16, from 6-8 p.m. at the Bryant High School Multipurpose Room. Funeral will be Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 11 a.m. at Dial and Dudley Funeral Home in Bryant.
