LITTLE ROCK — Democratic U.S. Senate hopeful Conner Eldridge says the resettlement of Syrian refugees should be suspended in the wake of last week's attacks in Paris while the vetting process is reviewed.

The former federal prosecutor said in a statement Wednesday that the background check system for the refugees needs to be reviewed to make sure those entering this country don't have any ties to terrorist organizations.

Eldridge is the only Democrat challenging Republican U.S. Sen. John Boozman in Arkansas next year. Boozman has called for a temporary moratorium on the refugees' resettlement, and Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson says he opposes relocating any to Arkansas.

Eldridge's stance puts him at odds with President Barack Obama, who has criticized Republicans for trying to bar Syrian refugees.
