Razorback game viewing ends with 1 shot, hurt at Conway home

Conway police are investigating a weekend shooting that left one man injured after a dispute at a home.

According to a report, police were called to 1470 Champions Drive in Conway about 10:22 p.m. Saturday on a report of a shooting.

When authorities arrived, they found a man, later identified as 37-year-old Bryan Walden of Conway, outside his residence on his knees with his hands on his head.

Walden told police that 42-year-old Rolland Gifford of Conway had come over to his house earlier that evening to watch the Arkansas-Mississippi State football game.

As the night progressed, Walden said he "repeatedly corrected [Gifford] on his language around his son" after Gifford had several alcoholic beverages. Gifford replied that Walden should put his son to bed, according to the report.

Walden said he later found Gifford "leaned over his wife [34-year-old Jillian Walden] as if he kissed her," at which time he asked Gifford what he was doing.

Gifford replied "nothing" and was asked by Walden to leave, police said. When Gifford refused, Walden said he then went into his bedroom, got a pistol, re-entered the living room and pointed the pistol at Gifford in a second attempt to get him to leave.

Walden said Gifford "got up in his face and grabbed the gun by the muzzle, trying to take it away from him."

The physical altercation resulted in Walden firing one shot that struck Gifford in his pelvis as Walden was pushed to the floor by Gifford, according to the report.

Police said Gifford was found lying face down on the living room floor and was transported to Conway Regional Medical Center. Gifford's exact condition was not known as of Monday afternoon.

During questioning, Gifford could not fully recall how he was shot, saying the shooting was accidental and that he had been friends with Walden for 10 years.

Police said the 7-year-old son of Bryan and Jillian Walden was in a bedroom at the front of the house. The child was taken into the custody of his grandmother later that night, according to authorities.

No charges have been filed and witnesses are still being interviewed, according to Conway police.
