Fishermen find bones near Lavaca

Sebastian County sheriff's investigators spent Friday searching an area of the Arkansas River near Lavaca after two fishermen found human remains along the riverbank.

A news release from the sheriff's office said several bones and vertebrae, which were confirmed to be human, were found along with clothing about 6 p.m. Thursday about 1½ miles downstream from Vache Grasse Park in northwest Sebastian County. The remains were in a wooded area about 8 feet from the shore.

Deputies secured the area and processed the scene through the night. A search of the area began Friday morning.

Investigators have contacted several agencies in the area for reports of missing people, according to the release. The investigation was ongoing.

The person's cause of death and identity were not known Friday. The remains were collected and sent to the state medical examiner's office, the release said.
