Calvin Bruce Collins, 48, was in the Crawford County jail Tuesday in lieu of $75,000 bond on charges of attempted murder, terroristic threatening, carrying a weapon and aggravated assault.

No formal charges had been filed against him as of Tuesday. He is expected to be charged before the next Crawford County Circuit Court arraignment day, which is Nov. 4.

Sheriff Ron Brown said Collins was arrested Friday afternoon in an attack on David Arthur, 57.

Brown said Arthur suffered a large gash in his head from a machete strike, a defensive wound on one of his forearms and cuts on his palms as he fended off Collins.

Brown said Collins' ex-wife Rhonda Morton -- who was at the 204 Railroad Ave. home at the time of the attack -- was able to stop Collins. She was not injured, Brown said.

Arthur was taken to a hospital for treatment and surgery, and has been released. Brown said he believes that Arthur will need more surgery for treatment of his injuries.

Collins was renting a room in Arthur's home, and they had been arguing over computer parts that Collins bought from Arthur, Brown said. Collins believed that Arthur owed him money from that purchase, Brown said.

Deputies responding to a 911 call at the Rudy residence pulled their weapons on Collins because he would not initially obey arrest instructions, Brown said.

Brown said deputies have had trouble with Collins in the past in assault and disorderly conduct instances.

Crawford County probate records show that Collins was ordered involuntarily committed in July 2010 as a person with a mental illness. Details surrounding the commitment were not available Tuesday.
