Student arrested after handgun brought to school

A 16-year-old student at Berryville High School was arrested Wednesday after police said the student brought an unloaded gun to school.

According to Berryville police, a faculty member was tipped off about the student having a handgun in his backpack about noon Wednesday. A school administrator confronted the student, and a school resource officer assisted at the scene, authorities said.

Police said the student is believed to have brought the handgun to school to return it to its previous user after the student traded an iPhone for the handgun.

The student told authorities that the handgun was obtained from another Berryville High School student.

Berryville police said a 17-year-old student charged in the early Sunday burglary of Berryville Pawn Shop at 304 Eureka Ave. is linked to the handgun, as well as five other handguns stolen during the burglary that have not been recovered.

The 16-year-old student is charged with possession of a stolen firearm, while the 17-year-old student is charged with commercial burglary and theft of property.

The names of the two students have not been released.

A full report regarding the incident is not yet available, the police department said, adding that an investigation is ongoing.
