Police: 2 found shot dead in Fayetteville apartment, 1 self-inflicted

Police on Friday found a 28-year-old woman dead with two gunshot wounds and a 33-year-old man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at an apartment at 2496 W. Sycamore St., according to a news release from the Fayetteville Police Department.

The woman was identified as Rebecca Leigh Gonzalez. The man was identified as Christopher Lee Burnette. Both were longtime Fayetteville residents said Sgt. Craig Stout, a police spokesman.

They were found dead at about 10:11 a.m. Friday when police conducted a welfare check at the apartment, according to the news release.

Stout said there was no note and police did not know a motive for the murder-suicide.

Gonzalez's mother called police when she didn't show up for work, Stout said. Neighbors told police they had heard a disturbance Wednesday.

Stout did not know who long the two had been dead when they were found.

"At this time, it appears to be a tragic, isolated incident, and the Fayetteville Police Department is not currently searching for additional suspects," the news release stated.
