Beautification volunteers sought at Central High

Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site is seeking volunteers for a National Public Lands Day event on Saturday to help beautify a portion of the Central High campus.

The project will take place from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and begin at the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site Visitor Center, 2120 W. Daisy L. Gatson Bates Drive.

An orientation and safety meeting will be held first. Groups and volunteers will be assisted and supervised throughout the day by park rangers from the National Historic Site.

Volunteers will work to restore and rehabilitate areas of the high school grounds, including areas of vegetation adjacent to the reflecting pool and benches that honor each of the nine black students who integrated the school in 1957.

More information is available by contacting Enimini Ekong, chief of interpretation and education for the historic site, at (501) 374-1957.

National Public Lands Day -- the nation's largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands -- is a celebration of the work, play and learning that takes place on public lands every day. One third of America's land is in public hands.

The annual event is hosted by National Environmental Education Foundation and sponsored by Toyota Motor Sales, USA Inc.
