Northwestern professor to talk on social justice

Symposium set at Philander Smith

Carol Lee, a professor of learning sciences and African-American studies at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., will be the keynote speaker at the third annual Symposium on Multiculturalism and Social Justice set for Friday and Saturday at Philander Smith College.

The University of Arkansas at Fayetteville is partnering with Philander Smith to present Lee, whose talk "Random Acts of Revolution in Action" will initiate an audience discussion about putting social justice into action.

Lee is the Edwina S. Tarry Professor of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University. She has co-written and edited three books, the most recent titled Culture, Literacy and Learning: Taking Bloom in the Midst of the Whirlwind. Her research addresses cultural supports for learning that include a broad ecological focus, with attention to language and literacy and black youth.

She is the founder of four schools that span a 40-year history, including three charter schools under the umbrella of the Betty Shabazz International Charter Schools, for which she serves as chairman of the board of directors.

The symposium starts at 6 p.m. Friday with a "Call to Action" that will include discussing books that reflect varied world views. Books will be donated to a local school.

Lee will speak during the daylong Saturday session, which begins with registration at 7:30 a.m. and concluding at 4:15 p.m.

The cost of the program that is targeted to educators is $99 per individual. A discounted price of $49 is the registration fee for secondary school and college students.
