Helena-West Helena federal building to be renamed to honor Jewish judge

The Helena-West Helena federal building will be renamed to honor Judge Jacob Trieber after legislation introduced by six members of Arkansas' congressional delegation passed through the House on Thursday.

The bill, which now heads to President Barack Obama’s desk for final approval, will change the name of the building to honor Trieber, the first Jewish federal judge.

Trieber, appointed by William McKinley, served from 1900-1927 as judge for the U.S. Circuit Court of the Eastern District of Arkansas. His career also included time as Phillips County treasurer and a Helena city councilor.

“Driven by his unparalleled dedication to justice and equality for all people, Judge Trieber took it upon himself to fight against all types of injustices, including institutionalized racism, which he opposed six decades before finally being vindicated by the Supreme Court and the Civil Rights act of 1964,” Crawford said in a statement.
