Police arrest teen in shooting at park

FORT SMITH -- Fort Smith police arrested Derrick Scott Haynes, 18, on Wednesday in the early morning shooting of a 17-year-old boy.

Police received a call at 1:55 a.m. about a shooting at Martin Luther King Park, 1815 Greenwood Ave. At the scene, they found a .40-caliber handgun and a spent shell casing, according to a news release.

Shortly afterward, a local hospital reported that a male had been taken to the emergency room with a gunshot wound in his abdomen.

"The victim was rushed into surgery and is currently in intensive care," the release said.

Police didn't name the shooting victim because he is a minor. Haynes was identified as a "person of interest," according to the release.

About 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, police received information that Haynes was at a residence on North 47th Terrace.

Kimmons Junior High School was put on temporary lockdown while the Fort Smith special weapons and tactics team searched the residence, but Haynes wasn't found there.

At about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, police found Haynes at a residence on South Q Street. He was taken to the Fort Smith Police Department and arrested on probable cause of committing first-degree battery, according to the news release.

Haynes was held at the Sebastian County jail without bail.

The investigation is continuing.
