Workshops planned on 'smart growth'

A two-day workshop on "smart growth" will be open to the public Wednesday and Thursday in North Little Rock, led by staff members from Smart Growth America through a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The free, two-day workshop will start with a 6 p.m.-8 p.m. community meeting at Boone Park Elementary School Auditorium, 1400 Crutcher St., to "introduce smart growth and share ideas." Pizza will be provided at the meeting. No reservations are necessary.

On Thursday, a Hands-On Planning Workshop will be 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. at the North Little Rock Chamber of Commerce, 100 Main St., in the chamber's conference center on the second floor. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Reservation requests for the Thursday session can be emailed to brhodes@nlr.ar.gov.

Smart Growth America staff members will lead the sessions for city officials, professional planners and residents. The Thursday workshop will focus on the city's Baring Cross neighborhood and include discussions about housing, alternative transportation, green space and economic revitalization, according to a workshop news release.

Smart Growth America is a national organization advocating the use of smart growth practices in communities throughout the country. It aims to help cities learn to guide and attract development to create economically vibrant, walk-able, equitable neighborhoods, according to the news release.
