Engineer suggests new master plan for Jonesboro airport

JONESBORO — A consulting engineer is suggesting an updated master plan for the Jonesboro Municipal Airport.

The Jonesboro Sun reported Wednesday that Mike Stengel of Michael Baker International in Little Rock believes a new plan could cost as much as $400,000. The city's airport commission has $300,000 set aside for such work.

Stengel said the airport's current master plan hasn't been updated in nearly 20 years.

Airport manager George Jackson said that, as the city grows, larger corporate planes are using the airport. He also said that some sports teams refuse to play in Jonesboro because the airport cannot accommodate their planes and because it is not convenient to land at Memphis, Tennessee, and charter a bus.

Stengel said it may be necessary to lengthen runways and strengthen them.
