Literary festival has programming for kids, families

Pulaski Academy sixth-grader Gabrielle Simone will appear at the 13th annual Arkansas Literary Festival at 1 p.m. Saturday on the third floor of the Central Arkansas Library System's Main Library. For her panel she will be joined by fellow child authors Morgan Billingsley and Jackie Lee via Skype as the trio talk about their two books: The Perfect Present and The Perfect Summer.

The event is just one of several children or young adult activities offered by the festival, which is a program of the library system.

Here are some other notable family events at the festival, which runs Thursday through Sunday at venues across Little Rock.

15-MINUTE ESCAPE

Noon-5 p.m. Friday, Main Library West Room, 100 Rock St.

10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Main Library West Room

The people behind Central Arkansas Escape Rooms join forces with the festival to offer an escape room where participants will need to use their clue-finding, puzzle-solving and teamwork skills to escape within 15 minutes. While the escape room is not scary, it's probably not suitable for young children.

OFF THE PAGE

5:30 p.m. Friday, Hearne Fine Art, 1001 Wright Ave.

Children's author Nikki Grimes and illustrator E.B. Lewis will attend this reception for an exhibit focusing on Grimes' character Danitra Brown. The exhibit runs through May 15.

HOW THE CAMEL GOT HIS HUMP

10 a.m. Saturday, Hillary Rodham Clinton Children's Library & Learning Center, 4800 W. 10th St.

Rudyard Kipling's tale of how an idle camel got his hump -- part of Kipling's Just So Stories -- kicks off a full day of family activities at the Children's Library.

Brian and Teri Kinder will present a show of interactive children's music.

TEEN READS

Noon Saturday, Main Library, Level 4

Authors Alan Cumyn, Janet B. Taylor and Jeff Zentner will hold a discussion on topics such as writing for young adults and escaping through music.

NIKKI GRIMES

1 p.m. Saturday, Children's Library

Using interactive poetry and prose, the children's writer will share the real-life stories behind her books.

3-D PRINTING AND GET GROWING

2 p.m. Saturday, Children's Library

Curious about 3-D printing? Come see what it's all about while also exploring the library's gardens and trails, and taking part in a greenhouse and garden scavenger hunt.

SNACKTIVITY

3 p.m. Saturday, Children's Library

Straw-woven bookmarks, Popsicle stick catapults and Cheerios bird feeders will be part of this fun-filled activity where children also can decorate and fill a bag with their own trail mix concoction.

FAST FOOD FUN

3 p.m. Saturday, Main Library, Level 4

The North Little Rock High School forensics team will deliver the truth behind fast food during this performance and examination.

TEEN POETRY COMPETITION

4 p.m. Saturday, Main Library, Level 4

Poetry finalists from the library system's branch competitions will compete for a grand prize.
