Man survives being clipped by train, gets ticket

ROYAL OAK, Mich. — A man who survived being clipped by a train in suburban Detroit has been released from the hospital — and ticketed for disregarding a railroad crossing signal.

The Daily Tribune reported that the 27-year-old man was filming a cellphone video of a freight train on one set of tracks in Royal Oak around 1:15 a.m. Wednesday when he was struck by an Amtrak passenger train going in the opposite direction.

Police Lt. Dave Clemens said the Royal Oak man is "very, very lucky to be alive." Clemens said the Amtrak train was slowing down as it approached a station. The newspaper reported that the man broke a bone in one hand and suffered minor head injuries, scrapes and bruises.

Police say the crossing signals were working properly at the time.
