The 12-story Framework building, in Portland, Ore., is projected to be the nation’s tallest timber building. The project received a $1.5-million federal grant that will go toward regulatory costs. It will be a mix of retail, commercial and residential use. Ground-breaking is set for this fall.

A planned 10-story residential building in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City would be the city’s tallest building of primarily timber. It also received a $1.5-million grant from the USDA to prove timber is as strong and as fire resistant as steel and concrete.

The first U.S. hotel built completely of cross laminated timber opened in May 2015 at the Redstone Arsenal in Alabama. The 4-story, 92-room hotel is affiliated with the Candlewood Suites chain and owned by Lend Lease, the private company that manages the Army’s lodging portfolio. Lend Lease said a crew of 11 built the hotel in 10 weeks, cutting crew size and man hours by 40 percent and completing the job 37 percent faster had steel and concrete been used.

The University of British Columbia in Vancouver is building an 18-story dormitory of mass timber to house 400 students. It is expected to open next summer. The project’s architects told Canada media this spring that the building is going up at a rate of one floor every three days, surpassing initial estimates of one floor per week.

A 9-story, 29-unit apartment building in London, is composed entirely of cross laminated timber from the second story up. It opened in 2009. Spruce panels of up to six inches thick and 30 feet long were fabricated in Austria. Stairwells and elevator shafts also are made of mass timber.

A 10-story apartment tower in Melbourne, Australia is under construction. It would be that country’s tallest timber building.

This spring, an architect in Asheville, N.C., announced plans for a 50,000-square-foot, six-story apartment complex for homeless veterans.
