Cabrera Bello, Na tied

Rested after the Rio Olympics, Rafa Cabrera Bello shot a 7-under 63 at the Wyndham Championship at Greensboro, N.C., for a share of the first-round lead with Kevin Na. Cabrera Bello eagled the par-5 fifth and closed the bogey-free round with a birdie on Sedgefield's par-4 ninth. On Sunday, the 32-year-old Spaniard tied for fifth in Rio. Na had seven birdies in his bogey-free round in the PGA Tour's final regular-season event before the FedEx playoffs begin. The American tied for eighth last week in the John Deere Classic. Luke Donald, Brandt Snedeker, Derek Fathauer, New Zealand Olympian Danny Lee and Peter Malnati shot 65. Donald made a hole-in-one on the 16th. Jim Furyk had a 66 in his first round since shooting the first 58 in PGA Tour history two weeks ago in the final round of the Travelers Championship. Patrick Reed also had a 66. He won the 2013 event for his first tour title. U.S. Olympic teammate Rickie Fowler birdied his last two holes for a 67. He tied for 37th in Rio. Andrew Landry (Arkansas Razorbacks) shot a 66, Bryce Molder (Conway) had a 68 and Ken Duke (Arkadelphia, Henderson State) a 71.

Rain delays Open

Marc Turnesa shot an 8-under 63 to lead the field as darkness suspended play Thursday at the Web.com News Sentinel Open at Knoxville, Tenn. Nate Lashley and Sam Ryder were one stroke behind in second. Sam Ryder, Jason Allred and Kevin Tway were tied for third at 6 under. Only the morning wave of players was able to finish as a rain delay pushed back afternoon tee times almost four hours. The afternoon group will complete its first round this morning. Matt Atkins (Henderson State) had a 67. Austin Cook (Jonesboro, Arkansas Razorbacks) was 3 under after 10 holes. Scott Gardiner (Farmington) was 2 under after 14 holes. Tag Ridings (Razorbacks) had a 70 and Zack Fischer (Little Rock) an even-par 71.

Evans leads Masters

England's Ryan Evans birdied the final hole for a 6-under 66 and the first-round lead in the Czech Masters at Vysoky Ujezd, Czech Republic. Evans, 29, winless in the European Tour, had a one-stroke lead over defending champion Thomas Pieters of Belgium and Peter Hanson of Sweden at the Albatross Golf Resort. Pieters was fourth last week in the Rio Olympics. John Daly (Dardanelle, Arkansas Razorbacks) opened with a 69, and Lee Westwood had a 70.

TENNIS

Coric beats Nadal

Rafael Nadal showed the rust from his long layoff with a wrist injury on Thursday, losing in straight sets to Croatia's Borna Coric at the Western & Southern Open at Cincinnati. The 30-year-old Spaniard was sluggish and well off the mark with all of his shots as Coric grabbed control and won 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 11 minutes. The 19-year-old reached the quarterfinals of a Masters tournament for the first time and ended his streak of 10 consecutive losses against Top 10 opponents. The upset left only one member of the Big Four still in the running. Defending champion Roger Federer and top-ranked Novak Djokovic are missing the tournament because of injuries. Andy Murray is playing, but feeling the effects of a grueling week in Rio de Janeiro where he won the gold medal on Sunday. Along with Nadal, those four have combined to win 54 of the last 58 Masters events. Steve Johnson also advanced to the quarterfinals Thursday and put himself in position to become the top American in the ATP rankings heading into the U.S. Open. Johnson beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 7-6 (6). He'll move into the ATP's top spot next week, knocking John Isner out of the slot that he's held every week since July 29, 2013. Isner lost in the second round in Cincinnati. Second-seeded Stan Wawrinka wasted a chance to take advantage of the wide-open draw on Thursday, losing to Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-4. In the women's bracket, Karolina Pliskova became the first woman to reach the quarterfinals, defeating Misaki Doi 7-5, 6-3. Doi was a "lucky loser" who replaced defending champion Serena Williams when she withdrew with an inflamed shoulder Monday.
