News splashes armchair athletes may have missed

In this Nov. 3, 2011 file photo, U.S. actors Johnny Depp, left, and Amber Heard arrive for the European premiere of their film, "The Rum Diary," in London. Heard is asking a judge to dismiss a $50 million defamation lawsuit her ex-husband Johnny Depp filed over a Washington Post op-ed she wrote about domestic violence.

After two weeks of the gold, silver, bronze and, well, the green (that's the color pools turned due to chemical failure and swimmer Ryan Lochte's blue-gray hair turned thanks to chlorine), the Rio Olympics finally end today with closing ceremonies at 6 p.m. on NBC.

Here's what other entertainment highlights you missed while you were watching the Olympics, either because you wanted to or because pre-empted Bravo programming meant your beloved Housewives got hijacked.

• Comedy Central canceled The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore, the half-hour series that replaced The Colbert Report. Its final episode aired Thursday.

Of course the real news here is that the show was on. As Comedy Central president Kent Alterman told The New York Times, the show "hasn't resonated." Good Nightly, The Nightly Show.

Pop stars and former flames Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are still fighting. Bieber has taken down his Instagram over fans' rude comments about his newest girlfriend, model Sofia Richie. Selena replied that he shouldn't be mad at his fans. He called her a user, attention-seeker and hater. Then she called him a cheater. And then he called her a cheater.

We're positive compulsive selfie taker Bieber will return and continue to post photos publicly. After all, he can't even keep his privates private.

• Actor Johnny Depp and his estranged wife, Amber Heard have settled their divorce. In divorce papers, Heard claims Depp, during a drunken/drugged rage, accused her of having an affair with actor Billy Bob Thornton, which he did by cutting off the tip of his finger and writing the allegation on a wall in his blood.

If that's true, someone took his Edward Scissorhands role entirely too seriously.

• CBS' Criminal Minds is getting juicy. Actor Thomas Gibson was fired, allegedly for kicking a show writer in the leg. Gibson is now "kicking" around the idea of a lawsuit.

And now show actor Shemar Moore has successfully sued former co-star Keith Tisdell for $61,000. The two started a charity to help people with multiple sclerosis, and Tisdell, who was arrested in January, admitted to grand theft.

If only Criminal Minds' on-screen drama was as interesting.

• We still don't know who will perform at the Super Bowl half-time show in February. Pop singer Adele told a Los Angeles audience it won't be her: "First of all, I'm not doing the Super Bowl. I mean, come on, that show is not about music. ... I can't dance or anything like that. They were very kind, they did ask me, but I said no."

The NFL and Pepsi responded in a joint statement: "The NFL and Pepsi are big fans of Adele. ... However, we have not at this point extended a formal offer to Adele or anyone else."

To borrow a football term, oh, "snap!"

Looking over this report, it occurs to us that nothing of any significance happened during the last two weeks. In fact, the Games were a delightful diversion.

So we look forward to the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo. And, of course, the 2018 Winter Games in South Korea at PyeongChang (by then we might even learn how to say it).

In the meantime, it's back to Bravo and the Housewives for our favorite sport: synchronized catfighting.
