Lanes to alternate during road work

Improvements to Shangri-La Road in Montgomery County will require a series of alternating lane closures through Monday, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Crews applying a chip and seal treatment to the road between U.S. 270 and Shangri-La Resort will reduce traffic within the work zone to one lane from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, weather permitting. Traffic will be controlled using warning signs and flaggers, the department said. The work began Thursday.

The department said the treatment is a proven method of sealing cracks and providing a durable surface using local materials at an economical cost. But the agency said that while loose material is swept from the roadway after the treatment, it often takes four to eight days from the time the material is placed until the gravel is bonded to the roadway.

The time varies with the length of the section being surfaced and weather conditions. Therefore reduced speeds are recommended for two weeks following the work, the department said.
