Dr. Laura Otter

Where I live: west Little Rock

Occupation: internal medicine doctor

My favorite space is: my kitchen sink window.

Why? My house is at the top of a hill, on a 10-acre piece of property that used to be an old dairy farm. We have a woodland setting even though we are five minutes from a bank, a drugstore and major stores. I can look out on the area where my girls played as children. I can take a step back and look west to see Pinnacle Mountain from my other kitchen window. The sunsets are wonderful. I can look out onto my gardens where I have many flowers. I have lilies given to me by one of my patients, pansies and other annuals and bearded irises from flowers given to me more than 20 years ago by a neighbor.

My wonderful mother-in-law, Iris Henry, passed away in 2013, and some of her ashes are in my garden where the bearded iris grow. When they bloom they remind me of her beautiful soul. In my other garden, with Pinnacle Mountain as a backdrop, I have my maternal grandmother's ashes in the garden, with lilies growing. My garden represents the love and continuity of family.

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: Cut back the privet that seems to be constantly trying to overtake our property. We are working on it this fall!
