Where I live: River Ridge in Little Rock

Occupation: Retired president of Metropolitan Bank

My favorite space is: My cave, which is composed of two separate areas: a home office in a spare bedroom and a woodworking shop.

Why? When I retired three years ago my wife Carol told me, "Yes, it is for better or worse, but not for lunch," so now I fix my lunch or go out with friends. Also, a wise old man once told me, "After retirement, stay out of your wife's space." Those two bits of wisdom led me to my cave.

I typically spend about an hour each morning in my office taking care of stuff. After lunch, I'll go to my woodworking shop to work on stuff. My projects have included cutting boards, serving trays, bird houses, tables, and my latest, which is a combo bookcase/TV stand.

So far, I have spent about 18 months on the cabinet and am 75 percent done (when you're retired you don't have deadlines). Carol says my best product is sawdust, which may be true, but you know, sawdust is a man's glitter.

After shop time, Carol and I have several great hours together enjoying a dinner she prepares, just like before I retired.

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: Enlarge my shop. The accumulation of stuff is limited only by the space made available.
