Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music

Although it's not really a Christmas movie, The Sound of Music is a classic that usually airs during the holiday season. And this year is no exception -- the musical is airing at 6 p.m. today on ABC.

Set in 1930s Austria, the 1965 film stars Julie Andrews in the lead role of Maria, a young woman who keeps failing miserably at becoming a nun. When Capt. Georg von Trapp, played by the dashing Christopher Plummer, writes the convent in search of a governess for his seven children, Maria is given the job.

When she arrives, Maria is met with hostility from the children, but her kindness and sense of fun soon draws them to her and brings much-needed joy into their lives -- including that of the elder von Trapp. Love eventually wins out, and Maria and Georg fall in love.

The Sound of Music is based on the true story of the von Trapp family, who won first prize in a choral competition at the Salzburg Festival. In 1938, Austria was annexed into Nazi Germany, and the family left everything behind to come to America. Soon their singing became a profession and they became known as The Trapp Family Singers.

After World War II the Trapp family started a musical charity organization, Trapp Family Austrian Relief Inc., which sent food and clothing back to Austria.

Many of the songs on the soundtrack have become just as special as the story. With tunes like "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," "The Lonely Goatherd," "The Sound of Music," "So Long, Farewell," "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favorite Things," it's no wonder the movie won five Oscars.
