Dash Rapid Egg Cooker
Dash Rapid Egg Cooker

Tools that do only one thing have no place in most kitchens. And the same could be said of appliances. So I was a bit surprised when I found myself drawn to the Dash Rapid Egg Cooker. After all, what could it do that a pan on the stovetop couldn't? Well, it can cook perfect hard-cooked eggs. Every egg. Every time.

The cooker also poaches eggs and can be used to make scrambled eggs/omelets, though I was much less impressed with those features. But that's not to say they didn't work, they just required a bit more effort, prep and cleanup wise.

The cooker works using steam. You simply add water -- the amount varies -- to the cooking plate, add the boiling tray, then the poaching or omelet cups and turn the unit on. The unit automatically senses when the water has boiled away (thus cooking to the desired doneness) and sounds an alarm and turns itself off. So even if you get sidetracked, there's no worries of overcooking the eggs or burning the house down. I think the cooker would be ideal in a dorm room or other space without a full kitchen. But even those of us with full kitchen access may find it appealing, as most parts are dishwasher safe and the unit is energy efficient in that it uses less water and you don't have to wait for that pot to boil.
