A 29-year-old Mabelvale man who was locked up on failing to appear in court charges walked away from a work detail Wednesday and is now being sought as an escapee, police said.

In a news release, the Saline County sheriff's office said Jeffrey Mays was seen around 12:15 p.m. wearing an orange prison jumpsuit and yellow reflector vest while working with inmates from the county jail along Chicot Road near Evening Shade Drive.

Mays was booked into the Saline County jail Sunday and given $1,500 bond, prison records show. He was booked on two failure to appear charges.

He had a court date scheduled for March 10.
