ASU overcomes cold shooting

Aundrea Gamble scored 20 points, and Arkansas State improved to 11-0 in the Sun Belt Conference with a 58-51 victory over South Alabama on Thursday night at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro.

The Red Wolves (17-3) have won 21 consecutive games at home.

Gamble was one of three Red Wolves to score at least 10 points. Khadija Brown-Haywood had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Amanda Lawson added 10 points for ASU, which won despite shooting 28.4 percent (19 of 67) from the floor.

“We are happy to get another win and just keep moving forward,” ASU Coach Brian Boyer said. “A lot of credit goes to South Alabama. They did a really good job of doing what they do and took advantage of their size.

“We always seemed to get that one stop or one score when we needed to keep us out in front.”

With ASU leading 49-45 with 5:39 to play, Gamble hit a three-pointer to end a four-plus minute scoring drought for the Red Wolves. On the ensuing Arkansas State offensive possession, Gamble’s three-point play extended ASU’s lead to 55-45.

The Jaguars (9-11, 5-6) cut the lead to 55-51 after a free throw by Chyna Ellis with 1:32 to go, but Gamble made 1 of 2 free throws to make it 56-51. ASU closed out the game at the free-throw line, with Brittany Fowler making both foul shots with 14 seconds left.

Marquita Daniels led South Alabama with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
